Randy Gregory ready to make good on what he deems a last chance

Randy Gregory has worked hard for a second chance in the NFL, but he knows it’s his last chance.

It is, Gregory said, via Todd Archer of ESPN, and if it’s not, I’m definitely treating it like it is. I feel like a lot of other organizations wouldn’t have stuck around for this long. I think part of it is just the faith in what I can do on the field, but they also saw that I was a struggling kid that was trying to get himself back on the right path.

The former second-round pick has 20 tackles and a sack in 14 games since the Cowboys made him a second-round pick.

Once again, I apologize to everyone who has been negatively impacted by my actions and incredibly poor judgment, in particular the Cardinals, our fans and my family, Keim said. I fully deserve and accept the punishment that has been issued. My goal is to do everything I can to grow from this personally and help others learn from my inexcusable behavior.

Multiple members of the personnel department will handle Keim’s duties during his absence.

Bell’s agent Adisa Bakari confirmed the lack of a deal shortly before the 4 p.m. ET deadline and said that the writing is now on the wall for his client’s future with the Steelers.

His intention was to retire as a Steeler, Bakari said, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. But now that there’s no deal, the practical reality is, this now likely will Le’Veon’s last season as a Steeler.

The Steelers released a statement of their own that said they will revisit a long-term deal after the 2018 season. Given the lack of success on that front the last two years, the prohibitive cost of another franchise tag and the tenor of Bakari’s message, it doesn’t sound like a particularly likely outcome.

Bakari didn’t detail how close the two sides may have come during contract discussions, but it doesn’t sound like they were particularly close. Bakari said the Steelers wanted to pay the position rather than the player, which leaves Bell to decide when he’ll report to the team in order to make his case to the rest of the league ahead of expected free agency in 2019.

John Schnatter: Papa John’s doesn’t want to do business with Roger Goodell

Papa John’s founder John Schnatter continues to search for a good spot to dig, despite being at rock bottom. He may have found one.

In Friday’s radio interview with Terry Meiners of 840 WHAS, Schnatter shrugged at the replacement of Papa John’s with Pizza Hut as the official pizza of the NFL, and then pounced on pro football’s Commissioner.

At a time when teams like the Falcons (temporarily, at least) and Seahawks (permanently) have ended their partnerships with Papa John’s, the effort by Schnatter — who remains a major shareholder in the company he founded — to target Goodell personally could result in some calls being made from 345 Park Avenue to other owners of other teams in an effort to get all franchises to sever ties with Papa John’s, and to replace Schnatter’s company with Pizza Hut or Domino’s or anything but Papa John’s.

The deal guarantees Bortles $26.5 million over the next two seasons as opposed to the $19 million he would have made under the option. In an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Bortles said that he didn’t really care about how much money was in the deal because he prized the security that came with a deal running beyond the 2018 season.

Bortles also suggested that he would continue to feel that way by pointing to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s habit of leaving money on the table to spend on other areas of the team.

I think definitely the way the Tom has done it is the way to try to model, Bortles said. Having guys and putting pieces around him was definitely something. When you take up a ton of money you kind of limit your team and who they can help you out with and put around you. I’m not naive enough to say that we don’t need a run game. We also need a good defense, we need good receivers, we need all these pieces. You can’t play as a quarterback and do it yourself so I’m more than willing to take less money than somebody else might in my position to put good guys around us.

Brian Billick: I’m not sure the city had ever rebounded from it.

Randall Cunningham: It just wasn’t our destiny to be in the Super Bowl. That’s my conclusion. Because if it was, we would have gone. But, you know, after that season things really started to shift and change.

Robert Griffith: My agent booked me for all these appearances at the Super Bowl, so I had to go down to Miami, and I didn’t want to be there. I had probably 15 appearances, I was there for four days eating crow.

Marie said it took years for her husband to get over the Falcons loss and said it remained one of his biggest regrets until his death on July 21, 2016, from complications related to cardiac arrest. But in the early morning hours on the day after the defeat, Green received an unexpected phone call, and with it recognition from the highest level that, despite the cruel ending, he had truly built something special.

Percy Harvin is a failure. He’s an entitled, high-strung hothead whose coaches struggled to harness his game-breaking skills as a wide receiver and return man. He complained, fist-fought and prima donna’d his way out of the NFL by age 28.

Percy Harvin is a success. A child prodigy raised by a single mom, he flew past his peers in high school and at Florida, enjoyed a lucrative pro career and won championships at every level. He retired in 2017, citing various medical issues and his desire to be the dad he never had.

Both of these versions of Percy Harvin are cruising Gainesville, Fla., in a silver Bentley on a Tuesday in March. Sporting a woolly beard and thick braids woven close to his scalp, dressed in a royal-blue Gators sweat suit, his seat tilted back at an unsettlingly obtuse angle, the NFL’s 2009 Offensive Rookie of the Year addresses his passenger as Bossman as he unfurls his life story.

NFL Supplemental Draft 2018: Scouting reports, predictions for eligible players

The NFL Supplemental Draft in 2018 features its deepest crop of players in over a decade. Two prospects are expected to be selected (likely in the first few rounds), and three other eligible players had 2019 NFL Draft aspirations prior to their ineligibility for the 2018 college football season.

What really matters: Beal was forced to leave Western Michigan due to academic ineligibility. He had considered entering the 2018 NFL Draft and garnered interest. He does not have major character red flags other than basic maturity and motivational question marks, both of which could be extinguished upon entering the NFL. Beal was graded as a preseason third-round pick by Optimum Scouting, and he garnered similar grades from NFL scouting services and teams. He had every NFL team, including multiple decision-makers, attend his Pro Day. The Chiefs have interest in both Beal and Alexander, and they have two second-round picks and a need at cornerback. Kansas City might take Beal in the second round or hope Alexander falls to the fourth.

The police report, obtained by The Arizona Republic, also revealed more details of his arrest and the DUI stop as the report stated his eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred. Keim told officers that he had been bouncing around and was leaving a friend’s house, claiming to have had two beers while eating pizza an hour or two before he was stopped, according to the report.

Police first noticed Keim driving fast at 12:12 a.m. on Wednesday, but once he got to the Chandler police station he said that he had been drinking beer since 4 p.m. and had about two IPAs in the hour before driving home.

Arizona Republic also notes that Keim declined to perform several steps in a sobriety test due to a knee injury and would not agree to a breath test. Instead, officers took two vials of his blood to test for blood alcohol content. The results of his test were not completed as of Tuesday morning and could take three months to process, according to police.

Tavares’ leaving the Islanders is like someone used the franchise’s stomach like a speedbag.

They signed Lou Lamoriello in an effort to stabilize the team, and Tavares ended up signing with the team Lamoriello literally built before leaving for the Islanders. They signed Barry Trotz to be their head coach for five years. They told Tavares they would split time between Brooklyn and Nassau Coliseum, before building a new arena at Belmont Park. They had local businesses offering him lifetime supplies of bagels, cheesecakes and beer.

None of it mattered. Tavares wanted to go home, and he didn’t have faith in an organization that had too much turnover (like jettisoning his friends Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen) and too much uncertainty.

In some ways, the task for the Islanders doesn’t change. They have a great young player in Mathew Barzal, who clearly becomes the franchise focal point. They have some prospects in the pipeline, especially in goal. The answers weren’t going to come from unrestricted agency, but through Lamoriello working his trade magic. There are some options, like wingers Max Pacioretty and Jeff Skinner, or center Ryan O’Reilly, or the Erik Karlsson gambit, if he wanted it.

But their attention should go beyond that. Please recall that the Sharks cleared out money in Mikkel Boedker and his $4 million salary cap hit, dealing him to Ottawa; and then buying out the contract of Paul Martin.

It’s no surprise, as I’ve said before to you, that Ryan is a guy that teams ask about. When people are calling me to talk about our team, they’re looking at our better players. Ryan is certainly one of our better players. We’ve talked at length about his reputation throughout the league, so that’s why we’ve been getting calls on him, said Sabres GM Jason Botterill. We’ll certainly look at them because of where we finished in the standings. It would have to make sense to improve our team.

The first week of free agency will dictate how Philadelphia handles the expiring contract of Jerryd Bayless.

If the 76ers are in play to land a max free agent, Bayless and his $8.5 million salary will need to be traded to a team with room, with Philadelphia not taking back salary. If Philly misses out on its targets, Bayless could be used as filler in a future trade, or the team can be patient and let his salary come off its cap ledger next summer.

One under-the-radar name to keep an eye on is guard T.J. McConnell.

With five point guards on the roster — not including second-round pick Shake Milton — McConnell could be squeezed out. McConnell has value in a trade based on a receiving team inheriting his Bird rights in 2019 and his low $1.6 million free-agent cap hold. A new team could chase free agents and eventually sign McConnell to exceed the cap. McConnell is also renegotiation- (starting in September) and extension-eligible.

Luck advised not to throw for 2-3 months to focus on rehab

After luck was placed on IR earlier in the week, it was reported that he was advised to not throw for months in order to focus on his rehab.

First, most recommendations have Luck taking a few months off from throwing — likely two to three months to focus solely on rehab. At this point, no one has recommended another surgery, though it remains a possibility.

Andrew Luck will be re-evaluated by docs again in Dec. Colts do expect him back in ’18, love Jacoby Brissett but not ignoring QB draft class

Luck is participating in the team’s first preseason practices, but there don’t seem to be any plans to have him throw anytime soon.

And then I was like ‘Ah, I’ll take this one’ [the call from the Steelers].

Three picks later, head coach Mike Tomlin scooped him up with the 195th pick. Twenty months afterward, Brown was a Pro Bowler. By 2014, he was leading the league in receiving.

Rodgers could also help Johnson find something that eluded him, and everyone else who has worn a Lions uniform in the last 26 years: postseason success. With Rodgers at the helm, Green Bay has missed the playoffs just twice — in his first season as the starting quarterback in 2008, and in 2017, when he played in just seven games. He’s won nine playoff games.

Johnson made it to the postseason just twice, and despite nearly 300 yards combined in those two games, the Lions lost both of them.

He deserved better than the Lions were able to give him. Rodgers deserves not to have to do all the heavy lifting. So I would have loved to see these two team up for empathetic reasons, but also because I think together, they could’ve been fire. — Sarah Hardy

Will the Lakers’ legacy be more of a plus or more of a burden for LeBron?

MacMullan: Neither. The Lakers have won before without LeBron and will win after him, because it’s L.A., Hollywood, Showtime — the perpetually sunny, always desirable NBA destination. LeBron can’t possibly stamp the same imprint as Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal or Kobe Bryant. There simply isn’t time. Cleveland always was, and is, LeBron’s legacy — and his eternal burden.

Pelton: I think more of a plus. We’re far enough removed from their most recent championship that I don’t think the Lakers will be expected to win a championship immediately after adding LeBron. But if he can get them there eventually, he’ll join a long list of Lakers greats.

Herring: I’m not sure yet. If he can win a title, it probably becomes a plus, because he will have done it in a major market that has never seen this sort of drought before. If he doesn’t win one, it probably doesn’t change anything at all, other than make a legion of Cleveland fans upset with him again.

In addition to Velasquez’s trip to the disabled list, the Phillies optioned lefthanded reliever Zac Curtis to Triple A Lehigh Valley.
